Synology Home Routers

This guide assists Phonoscope Fiber customers in troubleshooting Synology home routers, covering setup, internet connectivity, performance, security, and firmware updates.

This guide is intended to help Phonoscope Fiber customers troubleshoot common issues with Synology home routers. For further assistance, please contact Synology support.

Initial Setup

  1. Unbox and Connect: Unpack your Synology router and connect it to a power source. Connect your modem to the router's WAN port using an Ethernet cable.
  2. Access Router’s Web Interface: Open a browser on a device connected to the router and go to http://router.synology.com or http://192.168.1.1.
  3. Setup Wizard: Follow the SRM (Synology Router Manager) setup wizard for initial configuration. This includes setting a new password and configuring your wireless network.

No Internet Connection

  1. Check Cables: Ensure that all cables are securely connected. The Ethernet cable from your modem should be connected to the router's WAN port.
  2. Restart Devices: Power cycle your modem and router by unplugging them for 10 seconds, then plugging them back in.
  3. Check Internet LED: Make sure the Internet LED on your router is lit. If it's off, this may indicate an issue with your ISP.
  4. Router's Web Interface: Log in to SRM and check if the router is receiving an IP address from the modem. If not, try releasing and renewing the IP address or contact Phonoscope Fiber support.

Wireless Connectivity Issues

  1. Check Wireless Settings: Log in to SRM and ensure your wireless settings are configured correctly. Verify that your SSID is visible and the wireless mode is compatible with your devices.
  2. Check for Interference: Change the wireless channel in SRM to avoid interference from other devices.
  3. Distance and Obstacles: Ensure that your devices are within range of your router and not obstructed by walls or other objects.

Router Performance Issues

  1. Restart Router: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve performance issues. Unplug your router for 10 seconds and plug it back in.
  2. Update Firmware: Make sure your router’s firmware is up-to-date. See Firmware Update section.
  3. QoS Settings: Configure Quality of Service (QoS) settings in SRM to prioritize certain types of traffic if available.

Router Security

  1. Change Default Password: Change the default admin password in SRM to something unique and strong.
  2. Enable WPA3: Use WPA3 for wireless security if your router supports it. Otherwise, use WPA2.
  3. Guest Network: Create a guest network in SRM for visitors to keep your main network secure.

Router Firmware Update

  1. Access Router's Web Interface (SRM): Log in to SRM.
  2. Check for Updates: Go to “Control Panel” -> “Update & Restore” -> “SRM Update”. Click on “Check for Updates” and follow the instructions if an update is available.

Factory Reset

  1. Reset Button: Locate the reset button at the back of the router. Press and hold it for about 4 seconds until the router beeps.
  2. Reconfigure Router: After the reset, you will need to reconfigure your router using the Initial Setup steps.
